US Growers Watch Growth In Exports Of Sweet Potatoes To European Nations

A staple in the southern diets, and a famous favorite in Thanksgiving meal, the sweet potato is becoming a lot more ordinary in European regions, especially Great Britain.

American growers have found a growing market for the vitamin stuffed, low cholesterol, sweet potato from European buyers. Between 2005 and 2009, the US sales of sweet potatoes has jumped to over $51.4 million.

This is a huge change from 10 years ago, where Europeans regarded the sweet potato as an exotic item. Why the unexpected growth is unknown, but most likely due to the advertising attempts of the United States farmers to educate Europeans of the excellent flavor and amount of nutrition of sweet potatoes.

European food guidelines are more stringent than US standards, but the American farmers are not frightened to abide by those regulations. The growers are also buying new equipment to help produce a more consistent size and shape of sweet potato, which is critical to Europeans.

All the marketing and upgraded equipment help, but the vegetable sells itself.
