Gifts To Charities Are Up However Are Less Than Donations Throughout Pre-recession Times

Charitable gifts have risen this year over 2009, but still are less than contributions during the pre-recession times, according to big name charities.

In particular, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, raised $39.5 million dollars in 2008 to $40 million last year. That $40 million is still lower than the $42 million raised in 2007.

Boston College's Center on Wealth and Philanthropy projects that total US contributions will be between $222 billion and $227 billion dollars for this year. That is more than the $217 billion offered in 2009 but smaller than the $235 billion dollars given in 2007.

If contributions are mildly up, is that a clue that the bad economy is on an upswing? Or does it just signal that folks are accepting the economy as it is and expect that things are not going to change?

It is interesting to know how much cash is donated to charitable organizations annual. $227 billion dollars! That is dramatically more than you would expect.
